True, it charts the nervous insecurities, roiling family dramas, and quotidian travails of a particular boy.   Well, to answer THAT question, it’s going to take a little more time & in-depth analysis. Let me begin by delving into the film itself: Boyhood is the story of Mason (played by newcomer Ellar Coltrane), an average suburban boy with divorced parents (Ethan Hawke & Patricia Arquette) and an older sister (played by the director’s own daughter Lorelei Linklater) growing up in the heart of turn.

  The first shot in “Boyhood,” Richard Linklater’s tender, profound film, is of a cloudy sky.
